New Treatment for
Peripheral Neuropathy
Monochromatic Infrared Photo Energy (MIRE)

(Only available in our Old Bridge office)

Marlboro Physical Therapy, PA is pleased to announce the acquisition of a new technology and comprehensive treatment program for your patients diagnosed with Peripheral Neuropathy. Monochromatic Infrared Photo Energy (MIRE) has been shown to significantly improve foot sensitivity and reduce the incidence of falls in those patients suffering from the effects of peripheral neuropathy. This treatment has been approved by the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) for patients diagnosed with peripheral neuropathy.

There have been three recent studies in the following peer reviewed medical journals that support this claim. I have included the abstract of each for your review. If you would prefer to read the full text of any of these studies, kindly let me know and I will forward them to you. The studies are:

Improved Sensitivity in Patients with Peripheral Neuropathy: Journal of American Podiatric Medical Association 2005; 95(2): 143-147.

Restoration of sensation, reduced pain, and improved balance in subjects with diabetic peripheral neuropathy: a double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled study with monochromatic near-infrared treatment: Diabetes Care 2004; 27(1): 168-172.

Monochromatic Infrared Photo Energy and Physical Therapy for Peripheral Neuropathy: Influence on Sensation, Balance, and Falls, Journal of Geriatric Physical Therapy 2004; 27(1):16-19

The initial evaluation for patients with peripheral neuropathy will include Semmes-Weinstein monofilament testing and Balance assessments for objective baseline documentation prior to initiating treatment. The three times per week treatment plan will commonly consist of Monochromatic Infrared Photo Energy application for 30min followed by a comprehensive program of Therapeutic exercise, Neuro-muscular re-education, Activities of Daily Living and Dynamic balance training. A report will be forwarded to your office every 30 days to keep you abreast of the patient’s progress.

Please feel free to contact David Bertone, PT, OCS at 732-583-9494 if you have any questions about this exciting new program. He can also be reached by e-mail.
